Cisco UCS B Series & C Series Servers

Cisco UCS B Series Servers

Currently UCS B Series servers have many generations launched, and at time of writing, Current generation available are fifth (M5) and Sixth(M6).

Cisco B series server comes with Full Width and Half-Width Physical Sizes.

Cisco UCS Servers either have two-CPU socket or Four CPU socket mainboard. To Understand this, we must know it nomenclature:

Example: Cisco UCS B200 M5 –

  • UCS B Series Server
  • 2 – Represents, Number of Socket on mainboard, it has 2 No of socket on mainboard. This digit can either be 2 or 4.
  • M5: Model name and Generation (M Model – 5th Generation)

Below are current UCS B Series Server:

  • Cisco UCS B200 M5 blade server
  • Cisco UCS B200 M6 blade server
  • Cisco UCS B480 M5 blade server

Half-Width Blade Server

Half-Blade server takes half of the UCS B series server Chassis width, The Cisco UCS B200 M5 and B200 M6 are half-width servers.

UCS B200 M5 Blade Server

  • Up to two second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable and Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores per CPU.

  • Support for up to two optional GPUs.
  • Support for one rear storage mezzanine card.
  • Support for one 16GB internal flash USB drive.

UCS B200 M6 Blade Server:

  • Up to two third-generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors (with up to 40 cores per socket)
  • Memory:
    • 32 DIMM slots (16 DIMMs per CPU socket)
    • 3200 MHz DDR4 memory, plus other speeds, depending on the CPU installed
    • 32× DDR4 DIMMs for up to 8TB of capacity using 256GB DIMMs, or
    • 16× DDR4 DIMMs + 16× Intel Optane persistent memory modules for up to 12TB of memory
  • Cisco UCS Virtual Interface Card (VIC) 1440 modular LAN On Motherboard (mLOM)
  • Two mezzanine card adapters:
    • One rear slot for the VIC (Cisco UCS VIC 1480 or port expander)
    • One front dedicated slot for a Cisco FlexStorage RAID controller, Cisco FlexStorage passthrough, or Cisco M.2 RAID controller
  • Up to two SATA/NVMe disk drives or up to four M.2 drives

Full-Width Blade Server

A full-width blade server takes up the full width of a Cisco UCS B-Series server chassis, which means it takes two horizontal server slots in the chassis.

Cisco UCS B480 M5 Blade Server

It is the only currently offered full-width blade server, and it has the following characteristics:

  • Four new second-generation Intel Xeon scalable CPUs (up to 28 cores per socket)

  • Support for higher-density DDR4 memory, from 6TB (128G DDR4 DIMMs) to 12TB (256G DDR4 DIMMs)
  • Memory speed increase from 2666 MHz to 2933 MHz
  • Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMMs): 128G, 256G, and 512G1
  • Up to 18TB using 24× 256G DDR4 DIMMs and 24× 512G Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory Modules
  • Cisco Flex Storage storage subsystem
  • Five mezzanine adapters and support for up to four NVIDIA GPUs
  • Cisco UCS Virtual Interface Card (VIC) 1340 modular LAN On Motherboard (mLOM) and upcoming fourth-generation VIC mLOM
  • Internal Secure Digital (SD) and M.2 boot options
